Junior French Club - News

French Club on Mondays

The year started with a bang as we performed 4 songs and dances for over 200 children at City Hall as part of the European Day of Languages. The day was an exciting mix of performances, quizzes, food tasting and European culture.

During the rest of the year the children are learning incidental French through games, songs, activities and the Internet. French Club has been going well this year, with a lighter approach including lots of active games. All children in Year 5 and 6 are welcome on Monday lunchtimes from 12.55 till 1.25p.m.

At the same time, Year 5 have been learning French in lesson time with Mrs Pope and have been making great progress.

During the Easter holidays Mrs Pope went to France with the organisation CILT Cymru to forge links between our school and a French Primary School:

Locquémeau Primary School has about 100 pupils in 5 classes with an age range of 2-11 years. The staff and pupils were very kind and helpful and I was able to observe lessons in each class.

The nursery and KS1 equivalent classes were arranged in a similar manner to our own, and I enjoyed watching them make junk models of fish using Camembert boxes for the bodies! They also taught me lots of finger rhymes which I will be sharing with the French Club this term.

KS2 was much more formal, with individual desks, pencil pots and even glue pots. Each child was expected to stay in his or her seat for the lessons. No Breton was taught in the school and they were interested to hear that we teach Welsh from Reception Class. Year 4, 5 and 6 all had English lessons for 45 minutes twice a week either with the peripatetic teacher or with their class teacher.

The English lessons were very different, with songs, games and activities very similar to what we use to teach Welsh. We worked out that each school day contained the same amount of work time as our schools, but guess what… they had every Wednesday off!

The children from French club had written introductory letters in French to the French children – something that rather impressed them:
(“They really have made a huge effort, haven’t they!”)

I left our Website address and email address and they promised to write back to us. We shall continue to write to each other in French club, in French and English, and hopefully we will make some real friends among our Breton cousins.

mes amis

This trip was made possible by the generosity of the inhabitants of Lannion who welcomed the teachers from the course into their homes so no hotel accomodation was necessary. A big thank you to the kind couple who not only hosted me, but fed me delicious vegetarian food each night!

The trip was a superb success, and I can’t wait to teach the children some of the fun activities I was shown during the course. I really hope this twinning project will help us forge links and even friendships between ourselves and the people of Brittany.
